About the Item

Louis Sclafani, while studying in 1976 at the Siena School of Art in Italy, became fascinated with glass on a trip to Venice and the Island of Murano. After a 3 year apprenticeship in Venice with renowned glass sculptor Loredano Rosin, Sclafani has been creating unique and technically advanced glass sculptures in his own studio in Rosendale, NY. Louis’s work is included in many private and public collections such as the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Art Museum, Tampa Museum of Art,Museum of American Glass, and the Prescott Collection in Seattle.

    Louis Sclafani’s exploration in glass began as an undergraduate majoring in ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, New York. In 1976, Louis spent a semester abroad studying ceramics at the Siena School of Art, Italy. On a field trip to Venice, he found himself fascinated by the glass of Venice and the Island of Murano. He secured an apprenticeship with renowned glass sculptor Loredano Rosin and returned to Venice soon after to launch deeper into the world of glass. While living in a tent on a roof top behind Loredano’s studio, he learned from the best and found his own artistic direction. This “summer” job would last three years.     Pohlman and Knowles began their collaboration in 1992. They use a variety of materials in their rich assemblages, including hot-sculpted glass, various metal works, found objects and beads, achieving a fine sense of formal balance. Three notable research field trips had a profound impact on their personal and artistic development: in 1997 they visited Zimbabwe and Botswana; returning to Africa they visited Ghana in 2000; and in 2002 they traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and East Africa. They gathered creative and emotional inspiration from these travels. These experiences are used to create sculptures that embody mythological stories in glass.
